<b>HEBREW TATTOO POTRAIT<br />
</b><br />
In the year 2005, while I was 20 years old, I tattooed on my back the word "'woman" in a mirror text. <br />
It has taken me 4 years to be completely satisfied with the word and its meaning, in order to carry it for the rest of my life.<br />
<br />
The second time I was deal with my tattoo was during my BA Graphic
Design studies. I had to take a group's portrait that have anything in
common. it was the first time I ask my self if there any more crazy
people like me that make Hebrew tattoo over them self?<br />
<br />
This is how it all began.<br />
<br />
I find the decision of making this kind of tattoo is more complete than
an image tattoo. We instinctively analyze the meaning of tattoos while
providing criticism over the person who carries them. Therefore the
searching of those people that carry Hebrew text tattoo reveals personal
stories. Stories of why and where the tattoo is. Stories of people.<br /><br />

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
On last week’s episode of <em>Happy Endings</em>, Max (played by <strong>Adam Pally</strong>)
had a shirtless scene. Since the show features a healthy amount of sex,
that wasn’t unusual. But what was unusual was the discovery that Max
and his portrayer have a chest tattoo. A Hebrew tattoo that reads
“Asher.”</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<a href="http://wp.patheos.com.s3.amazonaws.com/blogs/faithgoespop/files/2012/03/max-happy-endings-tattoo.jpg"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-617" height="377" src="http://wp.patheos.com.s3.amazonaws.com/blogs/faithgoespop/files/2012/03/max-happy-endings-tattoo.jpg" title="max-happy-endings-tattoo" width="360" /></a></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
In an interview with <strong>Craig Ferguson</strong>, <a href="http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/adam-pally?before=1318954304" target="_blank">Pally talked about the tattoo</a>
and said that Asher is his Hebrew name. Since tattoos are outlawed in
Judaism, the ink is extra funny. However, the episode didn’t cover the
tattoo up with body makeup or address or give any background into how
Max might have ended up with the tat. Therefore, I’m going to retcon it
and say that Max had a Jewish boyfriend back in the day and got his name
tattooed on him and just hasn’t bothered to remove it yet. And now I’m
going to think about which cute Jewy actor they can get to play Asher in
a flashback.</div>

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Back in the day when the One Direction boys got their first tattoos,
we were excited, we were flabberghasted, we were quite frankly obsessed.
But now when we hear that the 1D lads have sketched themselves another
inking to stick on their lovely bodies, we barely bat an eyelid as it
just happens ALL THE TIME.<br />
Today’s 1D tattoo related news however, DID make us do a bit of a
double take, as it sounds pretty dramatic. Apparently, Harry Styles is
planning to cover his ENTIRE BACK with a giant intricate tattoo of a
Hebrew design. Oh jeez.<br />
<img alt="Harry Styles" height="428" src="http://images.sugarscape.com/userfiles/image/AAAAMAY2013/LUCY/290513-harrystylestattoo1.jpg" width="425" /><br />
According to Harry’s LA-based tattoo artist, Freddy Negrete, Harry’s
back will no longer be recognisable when he next returns to Los Angeles.
OH BUT WE LIKE HIS BACK THE WAY IT IS. Wonder what he'll get written on
himself this time. Maybe his regular KFC order? It'd save queuing
time...<br />
Negrete spilled to The Daily Star that “He just can’t seem to stop
tattooing at the moment. But he’s getting worried they’re all too
front-heavy so it’s definitely his back we’ll be concentrating on.”<br />
He went on to reveal that the huge design could take a pretty long
time to complete thanks to its precise detailing and impressive size
(ahem). “The whole thing could take months. Harry will probably have
more Hebrew lettering. He already has his sister’s name in Hebrew on his
arm and he loves it.”<br />
<img alt="Harry Styles" src="http://images.sugarscape.com/userfiles/image/AAAAMAY2013/LUCY/290513-harrystylestattoo2.jpg" /><br />
Well all we can say is good luck finding room on his bod for a tattoo
of that size. It's starting to look like a flippin' map of England's
motorways on that torso of his.<br />
This latest inking will knock Harry's tattoo count up to 7 billion and 68. Approximately.<br />
<!--3--><br />
What do you think of Harry's latest body art plans?</div>

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
The craze for <b>Hebrew tattoos </b> is driven by the rising
popularity of the language's symbolism for movie stars and other
celebrities. As such, Hebrew tattoos have gained notoriety over the last
few years, in trend with other tattoo art, thanks in no small part to
figures like <b>Victoria Beckham, Madonna, Britney Spears</b> and <b>Christina Aguilera</b>. </div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
For some, a Hebrew tattoo can express a deep <b>spiritual</b>
connection - whether for love, faith, or courage. For others, however,
especially for those of a more Orthodox nature, Hebrew is <b>a sacred language</b>. </div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
The old guard frowns upon tattooing some words in Hebrew anywhere in
the body (in fact, Leviticus 19:28 says, "You shall not make cuts in
your body...nor make any tattoo marks on yourselves: I am the LORD.").
As forbidding as the scripture might sound, <b>Hebrew tattoos are still highly sought-after</b>. </div>
<h2 dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Hebrew Script </h2>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
In order to have a true <i>Hebrew tattoo</i>, one must refer to the <b>Hebrew script</b>.
Hebrew is a very elegant, pictorial language, what makes the Hebrew
script perfect for tattoos. Here is the alphabet (it has some very
similar letters): </div>
<div align="center" dir="ltr">
<img alt="Hebrew alphabet" data-cfsrc="images/hebrew-alphabet.gif" height="207" src="http://www.freetattoodesigns.org/images/hebrew-alphabet.gif" width="535" /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<br /><br /> </div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
The search for "Hebrew tattoos" on any engine will invariably bring up
dozens of websites offering photos of Hebrew words tattooed on the skin,
all with <b>varying degrees of accuracy</b>. </div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
The Hebrew script is quite <b>complex</b>; moving the placement of a
vowel in the script might turn your declaration of "love" into
"leather" -- or your "freedom" into a "vacation." Buyer beware! </div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
This only reinforces the <b>necessity for an accurate translation</b> for your Hebrew tattoo, especially if you plan upon having it done in consonants-only, as the script was originally written. </div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
So, don't take any risks and <a href="http://www.freetattoodesigns.org/translate/hebrew_translation.php">click here for a professional Hebrew translation...</a></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Some facts about the Hebrew script:</div>
<ul dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<li>Hebrew is written from the right to the left.</li>
<li>The Hebrew alphabet has 27 letters.</li>
<li>Hebrew is an abjad type of writing system, all symbols of the
alphabet stand for a consonant and the reader must supply the correct
vowel himself.</li>
<li>Hebrew letters can also be used as numbers (common in the Kabbalah). </li>
<li>There's also a system called niqqud that uses vowel points to
indicate vowels. It's used in poetry, prayer books, foreign words, ...<br />
<br />
Here is the Hebrew transliteration of the name "Sharon" with niqqud:<br />
<br />

<br />
Here is the same name, without niqqud:<br />

<h2 dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Hebrew Tattoo Designs </h2>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
There are as many designs for a tattoo in Hebrew as there are grains
of sand on a beach, it seems, and all can be modified to suit one's
personal taste. Most are of a <b>religious</b> or otherwise <b>spiritual</b> sort, with other symbols surrounding. By no means does this limit Hebrew tattoos to Jewish or Christian followers! </div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Keep in mind that the Hebrew language is <b>written from right to left</b>
- and make sure to double check with a native speaker before getting
any permanent ink. It is quite possible that many of the free designs
available are actually backwards...how embarrassing! </div>
<h2 dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
I Am My Beloved's And My Beloved Is Mine </h2>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
The phrase "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine" or "I am for my beloved and my beloved is for me" is the <b>most popular</b> translation request we receive.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
The phrase comes from the <b>Song of Songs</b> in the Hebrew Bible.
The song is about fidelity and is often engraved on wedding rings. It
must be the most popular Hebrew tattoo design as well.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
There's a lot of discussion if this Bible quote can be used by males or not. In the Bible the phrase is spoken by a <b>female to a male</b>. In Hebrew the phrase is pronounced as <i>Ani le'dodi ve'dodi li</i>. Dodi (a male word) means "my beloved" and can be interpreted as:</div>
<ul dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<li>The female's lover</li>
<li>God</li>
</ul>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
So the phrase can be interpreted as:</div>
<ul dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<li> The love a woman has for her lover.</li>
<li>The love the people of Israel have for God.</li>
</ul>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Furthermore, in modern Hebrew (as opposed to Biblical Hebrew), Dod
means uncle. Using the female version of dod, doda, would bring the
phrase in the realms of modern Hebrew and would express the love of a
guy for his <b>aunt</b>, which is at least said a bit peculiar. Trying to make the phrase masculine would disfigure it.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<b>In my opinion this Bible phrase can be used by anyone</b>, regardless of sex. In Israel the phrase is used on all wedding related things, like rings, decorations, art, ...</div>

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<h2 dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Victoria and David Beckham</h2>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Both Victoria and David Beckham have the Hebrew script for the above
"I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine, who browses among the
lilies" as a tattoo. </div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<b>Victoria Beckham</b> has her tattoo design on her upper back, following her spine. <b>David Beckham's</b> tattoo is on his forearm.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Here are pictures of the matching tattoos:</div>

A Hamsa Design<br />
</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
The <b>Hamsa</b> (aka Hand of Miriam) is a Hebrew symbol used to
protect against the evil eye. It is used on charms, but also as a tattoo
design. Sometimes the hamsa tattoo is combined with fish images (Jewish
symbol for good luck) or Hebrew prayers. </div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
The Hamsa is also known in the Arabic world, as <b>Hand of Fatima</b> or Eye of Fatima. </div>

Madonna, in one of her more recent music videos for the "Die Another Day" James Bond film, displayed a <b>Hebrew tattoo on her upper arm</b>. </div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
The <b>Hebrew script</b> she chose to display did cause some
controversy. She has the letters "lamed", "alef" and "vav" tattooed on
her shoulder, but those letters don't form a Hebrew word. At first, it
looked as though it were simply stylish gibberish - and many dismissed
it as such, another flagrantly displayed international spelling mistake.
</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
As it turns out, however, Madonna's tattoo had deeper meaning.
Rather than simply being a word in Hebrew, it was one of the many names
for God as written in the <b>Kabbalah</b>. Legend has it that each name
of God in the Hebrew language has an empowering effect, gracing the
speaker (or in this case, the bearer) strength of mind, presence of
faith, the will to subdue the ego, and so forth - another reason why
Hebrew tattoos are so popular today. </div>

Britney's Hebrew tattoo<br />
</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<b>Britney Spears</b> had a Hebrew tattoo as well. Following her
friend (at that time) Madonna, she had the characters "mem", "he" and
"shin" tattooed on the back of her neck. Together the characters form <b>one of the 72 words for God</b> (Kabbalah).</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Reportedly, the first version of the tattoo had <b>an error</b> in it that made the word meaningless. Later, she had this corrected. </div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
She had the Hebrew tattoo <b>lasered off</b> somewhere in 2008. </div>

<b>Christina Aguilera</b> has a Hebrew tattoo on her left arm. She
has the characters "Yud" and "Bet" surrounded by the Spanish text "Te
Amo Siempre" ("I love you always"). The Hebrew characters are the
initials of her boyfriend <b>Jordan Bratman</b>. Yud (Y) is used for the J (the J doesn't exist in the Hebrew alphabet) and Bet is B, so: JB. </div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Christina has another Hebrew tattoo on her lower back, the popular "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine"-tattoo. </div>

<strong>Shalom</strong>. (that’s what the image to the left -read right to left says)<br />
Firstly tattoos are forbidden in Judaism (Leviticus 19:28) so the use of <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebrew_alphabet" rel="wikipedia" sl-processed="1" target="_blank" title="Hebrew alphabet">Hebrew script</a>
in tattoos can’t be for Jewish religious reasons, however there is an
explanation as to why so many people choose tattoos with Hebrew letters,
Hebrew verses and tattoos of Hebrew words.<br />
<strong>Mystery of Hebrew <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tattoo" rel="wikipedia" sl-processed="1" target="_blank" title="Tattoo">Tattoos</a></strong><br />
Having a tattoo in a foreign language lends a certain amount of mystery
to the tattoo, people will always be wondering what it says. This may
explain why in Israel – where people understand Hebrew – it is more
common to find tattoos in Chinese than in Hebrew. Not only the fact that
others need to stop and ask what the tattoo means but also that the
foreign language in question is an ancient one. Being one of the ancient
languages Hebrew brings with it a complex and expansive history. Just
the look of the Hebrew tattoo script conjures up images of Biblical
forefathers, Israel, a time of miracles, Jesus, Kabbalah and even the
suffering during the Holocaust. In short the appearance of Hebrew
letters is charged with cultural and spiritual emotions and a universal
western experience.<br />
<strong><a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_linguistics" rel="wikipedia" sl-processed="1" target="_blank" title="Historical linguistics">Ancient Languages</a> in Tattoos</strong><br />
So if it is the fact that Hebrew is an ancient language that causes
people to get Hebrew tattoos then why have Aramaic, Sanskrit, Akkadian,
Atakapa, Adia or other ancient languages not become popular tattoo
languages? Perhaps because although Hebrew is an ancient language it is
not extinct. With some people (about 7 million) being able to read
Hebrew the tattoo can be understood, explained and read by some.<br />
<strong>Kabbalah Tattoos</strong><br />
The mystic side of Judaism is the inspiration for many Hebrew tattoos. A
Kabbalah tattoo often includes one of the 72 names of G-d used in the
Bible. Each name is associated with a particular divine quality. Another
popular Kabbalah tattoo – the tree of life also is attributed with many
meanings and mystic significance. The Kabbalah tattoo of a red string
is said to protect against evil. In this way choosing a Kabbalah tattoo
in Hebrew packs in more meaning than an English phrase could. A Hebrew
tattoo expresses your deep spirituality.<br />
Hebrew letters also have a numerical value, in fact Haradi religious
Jews use the Hebrew letters to count with daily (instead of 1, 2, 3,
they count aleph, bet, gemal) so when you get a Hebrew tattoo the
letters you choose will have another level of meaning as each number
also carries with it significance.<br />
<strong>Hebrew Tattoos and the Bible</strong><br />
Hebrew is also the original language of the Old Testament so there is
religious significance. If a tattoo is going to quote a Biblical passage
than it might as well be in the original language. Being the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_languages" rel="wikipedia" sl-processed="1" target="_blank" title="Biblical languages">language of the Bible</a>
Hebrew also is considered “G-d’s language” and a spiritual language.
The original Biblical Hebrew is extremely poetic, more so perhaps than
English. Putting ink to skin with a Biblical praise in Hebrew is a
permanent commitment to the phrase’s meaning and an outward expression
of inner beliefs.<br />
<strong>Appearance</strong><br />
Hebrew script is aesthetic in appearance in the same way that Chinese,
Arabic, Japanese and Hindi scripts are, in fact even if you don’t
understand the meaning of the tattoo words you’ll admire the curves and
swirls of the script.<br />
<div class="wp-caption alignright" id="attachment_2328" style="width: 220px;">
<br /><div class="wp-caption-text">
<img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="https://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=bangcontgall-20&l=ur2&o=1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0!important;" width="1" /></div>
</div>
The use of Hebrew letters and Hebrew script in Tattoos is rather
ironic on one hand people are trying to be more spiritual and give their
tattoo mystic significance and on the other hand tattoos are completely
taboo in the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judaism" rel="wikipedia" sl-processed="1" target="_blank" title="Judaism">Jewish religion</a>. If you’re still convinced that you want a tattoo in Hebrew then at least make sure you get it done by a professional, and <a href="http://bangaricontentgallery.com/petal-mashkari/tattoo-hebrew/tattoo-ideas-what-can-go-wrong-with-hebrew-tattoos/" sl-processed="1" title="Hebrew tattoos">checked by a Hebrew speaker</a> for accuracy before you put ink to skin.<br />

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Hebrew is the symbol language for the original holy bible. It is
considered very sacred and stylish too. Hebrew is very close to the Jews
and has spread vastly to all the parts of the heavily networked world.
The symbols and letters have become very popular amongst the new
generation which has definitely passed on from the previous ones. Hebrew
Tattoos are the recent in thing now.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<span id="more-3125"></span></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Hebrew Tattoos get the beholder closer to the meaning of the holy
book and makes him feel the presence of the almighty through smooth and
tough times. The writing letters are also used by many to make up new
words of their own choice as this looks more stylish if written in this
language. Hebrew tattoos have become a style statement for many who love
to experiment with new symbols and yet keep the main purpose up close
to themselves. These tattoos fit in very elegantly and boldly in any
part of the body and makes one appear more stylish and smart.</div>

Why use a service like this?</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Very simply, for the sake of accuracy, and your peace of mind. A tattoo is a pretty permanent thing, and you want to ensure that it says what you want it to say. </div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Using an automatic translation program will very rarely give an accurate translation. And despite the best of intentions, somebody that is in the process of learning Hebrew may not have a deep enough knowledge of the subtleties and nuances of the language to give you a truly accurate and fitting translation. Even some native Hebrew speakers may not have a high enough standard of the language to give a correct translation. After all, don’t we all know some native English speakers with a less than perfect standard of English? A quick internet search for images of Hebrew tattoos throws up many examples of misspelled tattoos, or tattoos where we can see what meaning was trying to be conveyed, but has not been done as well as it could have been. </div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Check out the Bad Hebrew Tattoos blog for many examples of incorrect Hebrew tattoos and an explanation of how they were made.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Why choose us?</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
First and foremost, for the very personal service that we offer. You will be discussing your exact requirements with a group native Hebrew speakers who will discuss and clarify exactly what it is that you want your tattoo to mean, so that it will say *exactly* what you want it to say. We will also discuss how well your chosen phrase translates into Hebrew, as some English phrases may not translate well at all. We will be happy to offer suggestions for the best way to convey the meaning that you desire, if we believe your chosen phrase translates poorly into Hebrew. We have the most competitive prices that we have so far been able to find on the web (see our 'Services' section), and in our opinion you get much more for the price you pay.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Please note: Our initial consultations are free! We discuss your needs and options with you, and once we know how many Hebrew words your translation becomes, we quote you a price. At this point you can either make payment and instruct us to proceed with the work, or you can decide not to proceed, and walk away without paying a thing.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
How do we differ from other services?</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
We offer a more personal service than any other we have encountered so far.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
We consult directly with you to clarify your exact requirements, before any payment is required. On other sites, you are just required to type in the words you want translating and pay immediately. Our method leaves no room for error, and our helpful suggestions have been much appreciated by our customers, and often taken up.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
We can provide you with dozens of font and style options, not just one or two. Why have a Hebrew tattoo in the same font as everybody else? Our many options mean that you can choose a style that you feel suits you best. We have over 65 for you to choose from.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
We will supply your chosen word / phrase in ‘outline’ lettering (which your tattooist may require) and if requested, will also include vertical directions, make your text run in a circle or an arch, and all of this at no extra cost – other websites charge extra for this.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Follow up service. Once we have sent you your final translations, we are happy for you to come back to us for further help and advice, for example, should you require your chosen phrase sending again in a different size. Our service does not stop once we have been paid and you have received the work we have done for you.</div>

Dozens of billboards around Lubbock, Texas, now show "Jesus" as
covered in tattoos, including words such as "outcast" and "addicted."<br />
But this isn't intended to be a publicity campaign for tattoos as much as evangelizing for <a class="inform_link" href="http://www.csmonitor.com/tags/topic/Jesus+Christ" rel="nofollow" target="_self" title="Title: Jesus Christ">Christ Jesus</a>.<br />
The website advertised on the billboards "j<a href="http://www.csmonitor.com/jesustattoo.org" target="_blank">esustattoo.org</a>"
features a video of an actor portraying Jesus. He has a basement tattoo
parlor where tattoos such as "fear," "addicted," and "useless" are
magically transformed into "trust," "freedom," and "purpose."<br />
As
the narrator tells us, "All of us have been marked. As time passes, life
leaves its etchings on our minds, our body, even our soul. These
markings come to define us, our place in society, how we perceive
ourselves...."<br />

</div>
</div>
He goes on to say that "one man proclaimed a revolutionary message of
love and forgiveness ... for those labeled as outcasts and unlovable."<br />
"The
message is a simple one, Jesus' love is transformative. He loves us
unconditionally and no matter what you've been marked with, faith in Him
and love for others will transform us," Ashleigh Sawyer, media
relations coordinator for Jesus Tattoo <a href="http://www.christianpost.com/news/christian-billboard-campaign-portrays-jesus-as-tattoo-artist-106317/" target="_blank">told the Christian Pos</a>t..<br />
The
video shows the negative labels moving from the tattoo parlor patrons
to the body of the tattoo artist, symbolizing Jesus taking on the sins
of others.<br />
The website invites viewers to accept Jesus as their personal savior and tell others.<br />
But the reaction from some older <a class="inform_link" href="http://www.csmonitor.com/tags/topic/Houston+Texans" rel="nofollow" target="_self" title="Title: Houston Texans">Texans</a>, according to <a href="http://www.keyetv.com/news/features/featured/stories/tattooed-jesus-billboard-stirs-up-controversy-lubbock-4887.shtml" target="_blank">KEYE-TV in Austin</a>, was less than supportive. One man interviewed called the billboards "derogatory" and another described them as "blasphemous."<br />
However,
younger Texans saw the billboards as positive. "If you want to express
how you feel about God, you can put that on your body," said one young
woman.<br />
The generational divide about tattoos is also apparent in a <a href="http://www.people-press.org/2009/12/21/current-decade-rates-as-worst-in-50-years/" target="_blank">2009 Pew Research Poll of Americans</a>.
"Older Americans are far more likely to negatively view this trend: 64%
of those 65 and older and 51% of those 50 to 64 say more people getting
tattoos has been a change for the worse." A <a href="http://www.people-press.org/2007/01/09/a-portrait-of-generation-next/" target="_blank">2007 Pew study said</a> that more than one third of all "Generation Next" (ages 18-25) have a tattoo.<br />
How do Christians view tattoos?<br />
Views are mixed and often generational too. Those who oppose tattoos often cite Leviticus 19:28 "
Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the Lord."<br />
The website <a href="http://www.religioustattoos.net/Bible_Support/index.php" target="_blank">religioustattoos.ne</a>t argues that Jesus the Christ came to bring grace and a "New Law" to the <a class="inform_link" href="http://www.csmonitor.com/tags/topic/Old+Testament" rel="nofollow" target="_self" title="Title: Old Testament">Old Testament</a>
laws. It also argues that the passage in Leviticus is taken out of
context. Tattoos were part of pagan funeral rites and beliefs that were
intended to appease the false after-life gods. Tattoos by Christians
today have a higher purpose – to evangelize, the site argues.<br />
As <a href="http://www.csmonitor.com/The-Culture/Music/2011/0527/Justin-Bieber-tattoo-of-Jesus-Is-it-blasphemy" target="_blank">The Christian Science Monitor reported</a>
after pop singer Justin Bieber got a tattoo of Jesus’ Hebrew name, a
Christian blogger wrote: "the more serious questions to ask yourself
are: What are my motives for wanting a tattoo? Am I seeking to glorify
God or draw attention to myself? Will my tattoo be a source of
contention for my loved ones? Will getting a tattoo cause me to disobey
my parents? Will my tattoo cause someone who is weak in the faith to
stumble?"<br />
<div class=" text-justify">
Houston pastor Chris Seay <a href="http://www.dallasnews.com/incoming/20120223-houston-pastor-asks-church-members-to-get-tattoos-for-lent.ece" target="_blank">told the Associated Press last year</a>,
after asking his followers to get inked for Lent, “there are definitely
some Old Testament passages that have something to say about
(tattooing), but we don't think they have weight in this contemporary
circumstance. If we thought the Scriptures were prohibiting it, we
wouldn't be doing it.”</div>

<em><strong>Rosa Silverman, London Daily Telegraph</strong></em><br />
The woman who had “no regerts” tattooed on her arm was forced to
confess that she now had one, while the man with “Jenius” inked on his
forehead soon had others begging to differ.<br />
These were just two of the examples of poor spelling by tattoo
artists that should have all of us heeding the warning to “think before
you ink.”<br />
At a time when body art has never been so popular, cases of
carelessness among customers are all too common, said Veritas Language
Solutions, an international translation and language service provider
based in Britain, which recently claimed that poorly translated foreign
words or phrases were a particular problem.<br />
It gave one example of a man who wanted the Chinese symbols for “Live
and let live” on his arm, but ended up with the Mandarin for “Sweet and
sour chicken.”<br />
A woman who used an Internet translation tool to render “I love
David” into Hebrew later discovered she had inadvertently had the phrase
“Babylon is the world’s leading dictionary and translation software,”
inked on to her back.<br />
In another example, a woman wanted the name of her favourite flower
tattooed, but was left with the words “Sweet Pee” above her waistline.<br />
Sharon Stephens, the managing director of the translation service,
said: “Tattoo translations are in demand and we regularly get requests
for Chinese, Arabic and Hebrew and, now and again, Gaelic.<br />
“Many of the requests tend to be philosophical or simply personal to the person on the receiving end of the needle.”<br />
But she warned: “There are some hilarious examples of translation errors out there.”<br />
Problems often arise when literal translations are used instead of
finding out what the equivalent word or phrase in the foreign language
is.<br />
“Equivalent does not mean literal translation, which is what happens a lot of the time.”<br />

Problems arise when literal translations are used instead of finding out what

"The translator's task should be to translate the text into the
equivalent in the other language,” Ms Stephens said.

"However, equivalent does not mean literal translation, which is what
happens a lot of the time and could be catastrophic for the person having

<br />
"We encourage people thinking about getting inked to get their tattoo
translation checked before proceeding any further."

Another category of mistakes are attributable simply to bad use of English

Ms Stephens said: “We have seen tattoos like "Life go's on'", "It's

her new body art. </div>

Before I go any further, I would like to acknowledge that tattoos are a
controversial subject--not only because they are forbidden under
religious law, but mostly because of the weight they carry as signifiers
of the Holocaust. This article does not in any way aim to diminish the
very real suffering of millions of people. However, because tattoos are a
large part of youth culture, both here and in Israel, I felt it was
appropriate to cover it as just that--commentary on a cultural trend.<br />

<strong>Oy Vey Meter</strong>: 75%<br />
<strong>Hebrew for You</strong>: I actually think this one is pretty badass. The design, the eye, the sheer size of it--it's a winner.<br />

<strong>The Menorah</strong>: This is what happens when you lose a bet.<br />

<strong>Oy Vey Meter</strong>: 95%<br />
<strong>Chai and a Star of David</strong>: It's a little cliché and a little boring. 'Meh' is about the highest ranking I can give it.<br />

<strong>Mystical Ink:</strong> This tattoo gets points for being unique
and nicely executed. It's not my aesthetic, but I absolutely think it's
worthy of respect.<br />
<img alt="" src="http://www.jewishjournal.com/images/bloggers/mystical.jpeg" style="width: 100%;" /><br />

<strong>Oy Vey Meter</strong>: 100%<br />
<strong>Gam Zeh Ya'avor</strong>: Simple. Delicate. To the point. The
placement is a bit, uh, sensitive, but then again, if you're getting
words inked onto your wrist or forearm (like myself) you've thought
about that already. I dig it.<br />
<img alt="" src="http://www.jewishjournal.com/images/bloggers/gzy.jpg" style="width: 100%;" /><br />
<strong>Oy Vey Meter</strong>: 10%<br />
<strong>Eye See You</strong>: I'm also the proud owner of a hamsa, so
I'm a bit biased. This is pretty cool. The red details are unique, and
the eye is pretty realistic and disturbing. My mom would not approve.<br />

<strong>Oy Vey Meter</strong>: 1%<br />
<strong>Don't Kotel on Me</strong>: The idea is unique--the execution
is questionable. Those blurry red boxes behind the Star of David are
supposed to be the stones of the Western Wall. I WANT to like this. But
have you seen the Kotel? It's not red. White ink exists (I know because
it's been used on me.) I just wish the artist had utilized it a bit
more.<br />

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear_of_needles" target="_blank">Afraid of needles</a>?
You’re not alone. According to to HealthLine, approximately one in five
people suffer from a real fear of needles. And while these people may
be able to live an entire life without getting a tattoo or a body
piercing, getting pricked for medical purposes is hardly avoidable. But a
recent development at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Hadassah
Medical Center might make life easier for children who encounter a
needle.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Administering fluids to patients is generally done through
intravenous (IV) catheters, inserting a needle in a vein. However,
insert an IV catheter is not always successful on the first try,
particularly in children and infants who have smaller veins. This often
causes pain, distress and frustration.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
To address this need, Hebrew University students and
Hadassah Medical Center clinicians, attending the joint Biodesign
program, created a semi-automatic handheld device for rapid and safe IV
insertion. Called SAGIV, the device uses infrared sights and electrical
sensors to identify veins, insert the needle into the correct location,
and withdraw it in a single, rapid robotic movement.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
<b>Getting it right on the first try</b></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
“Inserting an IV is a demanding procedure, and many times
children need to be pricked five, six or more than 10 times for
successful insertion,” said Doctor Yotam Almagor, the group’s clinical
expert. “This leads to a lot of pain and frustration.” The group’s
prototype, developed by engineering graduate student Lev Lavy, has
already been tested successfully on children at the pediatric ward of
Hadassah Medical Center. “We had a lot of excited parents asking that we
use the device,” said Almagor. “Children who used to be pricked
numerous times <span class="GINGER_SOFATWARE_correct">in</span> every visit can now be connected in a single attempt.”</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
-</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Other students in the group include <span class="GINGER_SOFATWARE_correct">Gahl</span> Levy, founder of <span class="GINGER_SOFATWARE_correct">EnergySmart</span> Solutions, as well as Yifat Castel and Alex Wainshtok, who are completing their MBA degrees.</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;">
Biodesign is a multi-disciplinary, team-based approach to
medical innovation, created by the Hebrew University and Hadassah in
partnership with Stanford University. The program takes outstanding
medical fellows, Bioengineering and business graduate students, and
tutors them in the science and practice of bringing a medical innovation
to the market.</div>
